Foreword
It gives me great pleasure to write the foreword for the book Manuscriptology at a Glance'. The preservation and study of manuscripts form a vital link between our rich traditional knowledge systems and contemporary academic research. India possesses an immense manuscript heritage and many foundational texts of Ayurveda and other classical sciences have been transmitted through handwritten manuscripts for centuries. Understanding these manuscripts is therefore essential for scholars who wish to explore the original sources of knowledge.
In recent years, the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) has rightly emphasized the importance of research methodology in postgraduate education. As part of this initiative, the study of manuscriptology has been incorporated into the postgraduate curriculum. For students of Ayurveda, familiarity with manuscripts is particularly important, as it helps them appreciate the historical development of classical texts and strengthens their ability to engage in authentic textual research.
The book 'Manuscriptology at a Glance' has been prepared with the specific objective of helping postgraduate students understand the basic concepts of manuscript studies in a concise and systematic manner. The author has presented important aspects of manuscriptology-such as the nature of manuscripts, writing materials, scripts, preservation methods, and their relevance in research-in a clear and student-friendly format. Such a resource will undoubtedly be helpful for students studying the subject as part of the PG Research Methodology syllabus in Semester I and II.
I believe that this book will serve as a useful guide for postgraduate scholars, particularly those pursuing studies in Ayurveda and related disciplines. By making the subject more accessible, it will Ancourage students to take greater interest in manuscript studies and in the preservation of our invaluable textual heritage.
