This book, Maratha Supremacy and Mughal Decline: I Unravelling the Hidden History of Delhi, originated from a shared conviction that a deeper understanding of the history of the Marathas vis-à-vis their rule in Delhi necessitates a holistic approach.
The book is structured to guide readers through various facets of Maratha rule in Delhi. Chapter 1, Tracing the Marathas: Origins and Historical Sources, lays the groundwork as far as the reconstruction of Maratha history is concerned, with specific focus on the varied sources available. Chapter 2, The Rise of the Marathas in the Deccan: Determinants and Historical Perspectives, provides a comprehensive review of the constituent factors that led to the establishment of Maratha power in the Deccan.
Moving forward from historical sources and diverse geographical and cultural contexts, Chapter 3, Conflict and Continuity: The Maratha-Mughal Struggle (1680-1719), highlights the political upheavals in the immediate aftermath of the demise of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Chapter 4, Indomitable in the North: The Marathas and the Politics of Power (1707-1719), explains the rise of the Marathas as a crucial power in the political landscape of Delhi in the early part of the 18th century. Chapter 5
Expanding Power and Influence: The Marathas in Delhi (1720-1738), focuses on the political changes that took place following the death of Peshwa Balaji Vishwanath. It also throws light on the Mughal-Maratha war of 1735-38, and the particularly heroic entry of Peshwa Bajirao in Delhi in the year 1737.
Continuing with the political narrative, Chapter 6, Contest and Control: The Marathas in Delhi (1738-1756), deals with the history of the Maratha rule in Delhi from 1738-1756. The chapter discusses, in detail, the consolidation of the Maratha power in Delhi during the aforementioned phase. The three crucial years of Maratha dominance, i.e., 1754-1757 are also narrated in this chapter. Chapter 7, The Contest for Northern India: Marathas, Abdali, and Delhi (1757-1761), outlines the contours of the famous Third Battle of Panipat fought between the Marathas and the Afghan marauder. The next chapter, Chapter 8, Delhi after Panipat: The Marathas (1761-1771), summarises the aftermath of the Third Battle of Panipat, while also underscoring the significant role played by Peshwa Madhav Rao in the political dynamics of Delhi.
