Foreword
There are many books on the different aspects of Jyotisha T or astrology and its several branches. However, a simple introductory work on the subject of Muhurtha or electional astrology was lacking until my late revered father Dr. B.V. Raman, Father of Modern Astrology, came up with the handy title Muhurtha (Electional Astrology).
Muhurtha is a branch of Hora or predictive astrology and the other two branches are Jataka (based on birth time) and Prasna (based on question time). Muhurtha deals with the requirements of auspicious times for different activities of life. The present volume gives a layered presentation of the subject in a hitherto not approached simple manner. It also covers the planetary factors that are to be avoided for important activities of social life.
Based on the classical works like Kalaprakashika and Muhurtha Chintamani as also Muhurtha Madhaveeyam and other works on Muhurtha, Dr. Raman adheres to the parameters set by these classical writers without diluting their essence and at the same time avoiding being rigid. What sets this title apart is the fact of the author's rich experience of over six decades going into the explanations in it.
I am thankful to Mr. J.P. Jain and Mr. Abhishek Jain of Motilal Banarsidass International for taking up the publication of this invaluable text book on Muhurtha after a hiatus of many years.

astrology There have been many books in recent years on but most of them deal with predictive astrology proper. Muhurtha or Electional Astrology, whilst no doubt an
important adjunct to horoscopy has got its own distinct place in the general scheme of astrological literature. There is perhaps no human activity in the modern times that does not seek the aid of Muhurtha. The justification of this book is therefore that it tries to show astrology encourages human effort by asking a man to do the right thing at the right moment. The aim of the book is to present to the reader in a concise form all the essential principles of Muhurtha, so that he could make use of them in all walks of life. A vast literature is extant in Samskrit on this subject. I have only endeavoured to present in these pages just the essential principles culled out from standard works. Where differences were noticeable between two standard works, I have advanced my own views the justification being my humble experience in this line extending over nearly 20 years during which time I have dealt with thousands of election charts touching almost all human activities. The reader is at liberty to reject my opinions if he feels they do not merit his acceptance.
The aim of astrology is to dispel the fear of the unknown and to give scope for the free play of effort. And Muhurtha just supplies this want. This treatise is by no means complete. The subject is vast. Yet I have gathered information from many acknowledged sources, which I am sure, will be found to be of the greatest use to the modern man so that instead of merely passing through the formality of astrological consultation, by entrusting the election of a Muhurtha to quacks and montebanks, he may be enabled to so time his activities as to move in harmony with the laws of nature.
