Preface
Multi-Dimensional Aspects of Folklore is a collection of articles written on various aspects of folklore of Bengal on one hand and discussion on folkloric aspects in general on the other. Of course, majority of the articles are on the different folkloric elements of Bengal. The intention is very clear. The author intends to familiarize the readers, especially those from non-Bengali communities, with the elements of the long cherished folkloric tradition of Bengal of which they are not aware.
Bohurupi of Bishoipur, songs of Pagla Kanai, folk deities of Bengal, our vows, toiling masses as represented in our proverbs, social consciousness that has been reflected in Tushu, Humanism in Bengali Ballads, Some Selected Folk Musical Instruments and others need special mention in this connection. Folk tales of Germany, Contradiction in Superstition and Sexuality in Riddles are not exclusively related to folklore of Bengal.
The author sincerely hopes that the book will satisfy those who are interested in folklore in general and folklore of Bengal in particular.
Introduction
Generally, books written on different aspects of folklore are published by our Centre. Obviously, we give emphasis on the folklore of Bengal. But there is a growing demand from the readers to publish books on different aspects of folklore in English. The present book is part of that venture. We feel genuine pleasure that this book has been written by a senior folklorist like Professor Barun Kumar Chakraborty. The present work is a compilation of 27 articles, all but one of which deal with different aspects of the folklore of Bengal. We sincerely hope that the readers interested in folklore will be pleased to go through the articles contained in this book.
