Book Description
About the Book

The present work Museum Studies is a collection of sixteen papers by the late Prof. V.S. Agrawala on museum methods and ideals. Prof. Agrawala was one of the pioneers of Museums movement in India and was associated from the very beginning of his career with the Museums service of the country. He served for about two decades as incharge of the Museums at Mathura, Lucknow and New Delhi and was Head of the Museums Branch, Archaeological Survey of India, for a number of years. It was he who set up at New Delhi initial art collections for the National Museum of Independent India and organised First National Exhibition in 1948 and Inter- Asian Art Exhibition in 1947. Moreover, he was first to realise the need of a National Forum for the museums and their staff in the country, and through his efforts a Museums Association of India came into being as an active and vital organisation with its research journal under his editorship. In the early issues of this journal he had Opportunity to give words to his thought on different aspects of _ Museology and to set up guide-lines for the new progress of Archaeological Museums in the country.

It is gratifying to find that a full-fledged course on Museology is now being run by several Indian Universities at the post-graduate level. It is hoped the Museum Studies consisting of sixteen papers and addresses on museum problems and exhibitions will be of great help and use for the students and scholars interested in the study of the subject.
