Preface The Arya Vaidya Sala, Kottakkal has been conducting Annual Ayurveda Seminars in connection with the Founder's Day Celebrations since 1964 and All India Essay Competitions since 1965. The proceedings of seminars and prize winning essays are being published regularly. They cover a wide range of topics and have become a veritable source of information to the students and researchers in the field of ayurveda. 'Madakadravyas (Narcortics)' was the topic for essay competition in 1985.

Hope that this will be useful for students and scholars alike.

Introduction Dravyas of the universe are classified into two major groups. They are Karanadravyas (causal) and Karyadravyas (effectual). Karanadravyas are again sub-classified as Panchamahabhuta, Atma, Manas, Dik and Kala. On the other hand, Kariyadravyas are again sub-classified into two important groups viz Chetana dravyas and Achetanadravyas. Chetanadravyas are again divided as i) Bahiratantaschetanadravyas include Jarayu, Andaja, Swedaja and Utbhija ii) Antaschetanadravyas generally include all plants and drug materials. Achetanadravyas are classified as Prakrita and Kritrima. Here the Madakadrayvas come under the Antaschetanadravyas in general.
