Book Description
Preface

The Subodhini commentary on Jaimini Sutras by Neelakantha has a significant place in Jaimını Jyotisha literature. It is the most popular among all the commentaries as evidenced by the availability of its manuscripts in almost all Oriental Manuscript Libraries and centers of learning spread across undivided India. Further, it is also important for understanding how the terse Jaimini Sutras are to be interpreted logically. Though Neelakantha's work appears to be fading in its glory once any scholar becomes acquainted with other works like Jataka Sara Sangraha, Sutrarthaprakashika, Kalpalata and Phalaratnamala, it is important for every student of Jaimini Jyotisha to have a thorough study of Neelakantha's Subodhini in order to appreciate the entire system comprehensively.

There are some characteristic features of Neelakantha's Subodhini commentary. The most important of them are: (1) Oja-pada (odd-footed) and Yugma-pada (even-footed) nature of the signs; (1) Fixed Dasa duration of 9 years for all the Dasas excepting a few like Chara Dasa, Sthira Dasa, Yogardha Dasa, Varnada Dasa and Trikona Dasa; (iii) Definition of the Brahma planet, (iv) Use of separate charts like the Navamsa chart, Drekkana chart and so on; (v) Typical interpretations of some Sutras like the Sutras dealing with the Drik Dasa.

For the purpose of this English translation of Subodhini, I have relied on these texts: (1) Jaimini Sutras with Neelakantha's Subodhini commentary in Telugu language published in 1937 by Sri Challa Lakshmi Nrusimha Shastry, (ii) Jaimini Sutras with Neelakantha's Subodhini commentary in Devanagari published many decades back by Khemaraj Srikrishna Das at Sri Venkateshwara Steam Press, Mumbai, (ii) Partial Manuscript of 26 pages bearing No. 1723 available on internet, may be from BORI, Baroda, (iv) Jaimini Sutras Teekapothi published with Neelakantha's commentary in Devanagari by Hazarilal Ganesh Prasad in Samvat 1935 (1878 CE) - digitized and made available on internet by Karnataka Samskruta University, and (v) Manuscript No. 882 प of Jaimini Sutras with Neelakantha commentary in Devanagari of Samvat 1885 (1828 CE) belonging to the Shri Raghunatha Temple MSS Library, Jammu digitized and made available on internet by Dharmartha Trust, Jammu & Kashmir.

In this English translation of Subodhını, I have provided the original text in Devanagan followed by English translation and extensive notes. The notes include other versions of the Sutras if available and discuss the alternative interpretations made in other commentaries and treatises for the given Sutras. I have also highlighted the strengths and weaknesses of the logic provided by Neelakantha. Case studies have also been inserted wherever demonstration of the concepts is required, particularly in the context of various Dasas. The instructions of a Dasa discussed at various instances in the text are summarized at one place in the form of rules of that Dasa for easy reference of the readers. The case studies in this translation are provided for the purpose of demonstration only. I am neither endorsing the concepts proposed by Neelakantha nor am I against his interpretation. I have done my job as a sincere translator and student.

Most of the available manuscripts and published versions of the Subodhini deal with the initial two chapters of the Jaimini Sutras. However, I could collect a few manuscripts that claim to be the Subodhini commentary of the third and fourth chapters of Jaimini Sutras. They need a good deal of comparison and study before they can be published which, if the almighty wishes, I may present to my readers in future as the second volume of Subodhini.

This is my third book in Jaimini Jyotisha Series after Jataka Sara Sangraha and Jyotih Pradeepika. As expressed earlier in these two books, I have embarked on a journey of bringing out the available commentaries and expositions of the Jaimini Jyotisha to make them accessible to all discerning Jyotisha seekers. After the present work Subodhini, Sutrarthaprakashika by Akumalla Nrusimha Suri along with another version of Jyotishpradeepika of Lakshmana Suri will be published. I have plans to bring out Vanchinatheeyam, Kalpalata, Phalaratnamala and Balakrishnananda Saraswati's commentary also besides a compilation of all the available Vruddha Karikas. Nevertheless, realization of this plan is left to the will of Lord Sri Hari.
