Shri Dhirendranath Patnaik, at present Assistant Secretary of the Orissa Sangeet Natak Akademi has written a useful book on Odissi Dance which gives the history of development of this particular type of dance in this part of India and also he has dealt with the technique of the dance. There was a time when Odissi dance was not recognised as classical because, it was not codified in the modern language. This dance has now attracted the attention of not only the whole of India but also of many other countries. Many foreign students are now taking delight in performing the Odissi dance. The attempt of Shri Dhirendranath Patnaik made in this book is commendable.
In the history of India it is interesting to note how each region has developed its own culture which manifests itself in dance, music and literature. It is further interesting that inspite of all variances the Indian culture as a whole predominates all the regional cultures throughout India. Dance, music and literature of Orissa have their own significance and have their own contribution to the development of Indian culture. The book on Odissi dance will be helpful in understanding the specialities which Orissa has developed. The specialities of different regions are essential for the purpose of integration of the Indian society as a whole. I congratulate Shri Dhirendranath Patnaik again on the effort which he has made.
