भूमिका प्रस्तुत 'परीक्षा मुख' ग्रन्थ एक उच्च कोटि का न्याय ग्रन्थ है। न्याय ग्रन्थों का पठन-पाठन आजकल बहुत विरल हो गया है। न्याय ग्रन्थों के नाम से ही अब लोग डरते हैं। यह विषय अत्यन्त नीरस और दुरूह होता है। न्याय ग्रन्थों को पढ़ना लोहे के चने चबाना है, ऐसा गुरु मुख से भी सुना है। इतना होते हुए भी इन ग्रन्थों का अध्ययन आज के समय में भी नितान्त आवश्यक है। इन ग्रन्थों के अध्ययन से सम्यदर्शन उत्पन्न होता है और उत्पन्न हुए सम्यक्त्व में दृढ़ता आती है, यह मेरी स्वयं की अनुभूति है। इस मार्ग पर आने के बाद ब्रह्मचारी अवस्था से ही हम आचार्य स्वामी समन्तभद्र विरचित 'देवगम स्तोत्र' का पाठ करते थे। कहीं अर्थ समझ आता था, कहीं अर्थ समझ नहीं आता था, फिर भी ग्रन्थ का आम्नाय रूप पाठ करते रहने से ऐसा प्रतीति में आता था कि जिनमत के अलावा अन्य सभी मत एकान्त अभिप्राय को धारण करने वाले हैं और कुछ न कुछ समझ में कमी रखते हैं। आचार्य देव के वह श्लोक जिनमत के स्याद्वाद सिद्धान्त के प्रति बहुमान और रुचि बढ़ाते हैं। तत्त्व का श्रद्धान जब परीक्षा की कसौटी पर कस जाता है तो मन में शंकादि दोष उत्पन्न नहीं हो पाते हैं। जीवादि तत्त्वों का मजबूत श्रद्धान इन परीक्षा प्रधान ग्रन्थों को पढ़े बिना कदापि सम्भव नहीं है। न्याय ग्रन्थों के बीज आचार्य कुन्द कुन्द देव के ग्रन्थों में और आचार्य उमास्वामी के तत्त्वार्थ सूत्र में सर्वप्रथम देखने में आते हैं। इन्हीं बीजभूत सिद्धान्तों को आचार्य समन्तभद्र देव ने अंकुरित किया और न्याय ग्रन्थों की नीव डाली। जैन न्याय की आधार शिला रखने का श्रेय आचार्य समन्तभद्र को जाता है।
