Book Description
About the Book
This book discusses the quintessential aspects of George Santayana's wide and comprehensive philosophy. Its critical and comparative discussions centre round the problems of Epistemology, Metaphysics, Aesthetics, Ethics and Religion. This makes it all the more interesting. What is noteworthy about this book is that it shows how naturalism serves as a basis of the idealistic philosophy of George Santayana. Moreover, the illustrious part of this treatise is that essence, as discovered by Santayana by the doubting process, serves as the keynote of his whole philosophy. The exposition of Santayana's philosophy on the basis of the above two points is an outstanding feature of the present work. What is captivating about this book is that it shows how the natural gets reconciled with the ideal by making the former the ground of the latter.

Foreword
THE present work, as its title indicates, is devoted to the study of the Philosophy of George Santayana, one of the leading thinkers of the modern age. Born in Spain, he came over to the United States at the age of nine. He did his graduate studies in Philosophy at Harvard under the able guidance of two outstanding philosophers of the day, William James and Josiah Royce. Santayana is not only a philosopher, but also a litterateur and he writes in a suave manner. His naturalism may be regarded as one of the most comprehensive philosophies of the present century and he has made significant contributions to the development of contemporary realistic epistemology. Santayana's philosophical career spread over more than fifty years and it can be broadly divided into two periods. In the first period - during which he published The Sense of Beauty (1896) and The Life of Reason (5 vols 1905-06) he regarded philosophy as a kind of descriptive psychology. He put "mind" in its biological context and drew our attention to its capacity to give an aesthetic and ideal meaning to its surroundings. In the second period which saw the publications of his Scepticism and Animal Faith (1923) and Realms of Being (4 vols, 1927-40) he switched over to a non-psychological mode of approach and introduced a set of ontological distinctions in the realms of being - Essence, Matter, Truth and Spirit. He sharply distinguished between existence and essence he characterized the former as temporal and changeable, and the latter as ideal, eternal and permanent.

Preface
It is a matter of great satisfaction that this book finds itself in its second edition after a long gap of forty-seven years. In this edition an Appendix on Santayana's Americanism has been included. Santayana was an American philosopher and one of the leading thinkers of the modern age. He was a proponent of Critical Realism. Critical Realism was a school in the US bourgeois philosophy of the 1920s and 1930s. Among the main advocates of this School we can cite the names of A. Lovejoy, G. Santayana and R. Sellers. Santayana admitted the objective existence of the material world; but what was unique in his statement was that objects would not be cognized directly, but indirectly, through "essences" (that is, through real or possible qualities) as signs of objects. In his understanding of the "essences", Santayana, undoubtedly, was very much close to Plato. The present work on the Philosophy of George Santayana will elicit interest in those who are keen in the study of this great thinker. I convey my heartfelt thanks to Mr Rajendra Agarwal of Suryodaya Books for kindly accepting the task of re-publishing the book and that with great care and utter responsibility.
