Book Description
Foreword
Science is a subset of philosophy, and both ask the question what is the structure of the Universe we live in and the very purpose of its existence. There is, however, a break in the methods of investigation and the inter-pretations of what we see and conclude. The quotation by Neurath at the beginning of the book speaks a lot on this matter in that Philosophy, unlike Science, is one in which we build the boat not necessarily plank by plank, even as we stay outside it. Prof. Sreekantan, with long years of study of both Science and Philosophy, has produced a "booklet" which is remarkable, in that it throws light on the thinking capability of man from remote times to the present day in a concise but excellently readable way and yet covering an enormous amount of information. His sources are from the great mountain of Sanskrit and Greek philosophy. It is followed by the wonderful sprouting of the European renaissance and post-renaissance world of science. The book was meant as a "initiation" book for students at the PUC level to interest them in this world of thought, but as it has turned out it can also satisfy a large spectrum of readers. In fact, such a type of book does not exist in literature where all the subjects involved are referred to in some detail with a coherent account of the inter-connections. Of special interest is the impact of the Cartesian partition, which separates the mind and body, i.e., the observer and the observed that has led to the great period of Newtonian Physics.

Introduction
According to current scientific views, the thinking man, the Homo Sapien, emerged on the earth about 40,000 years ago as a product of 3 billion years of evolution beginning as a single celled organism. Man acquired the facility of some kind of language communication not more than 10,000 years ago and started living in communities. Based on our daily experience and the type of questions that we ask ourselves or others, we can surmise what kind of questions should have bothered these early men and women who did not have the benefit of the cumulative knowledge that we possess to-day. Let us guess and list some of them.
