Book Description
Preface

This study which was originally undertaken in the Mithila Research Institute, Darbhanga was suggested to the author by Mm. Dr. Gopinath Kaviraj at the request of his illustrious student late Mm. Dr. Umesh Mishra, the then director of the Institute. It was subsequently accepted as a dissertation for the degree of Ph. D. in the University of Bhagalpur.
In presenting the book to the academic world the writer is not unaware of the fact that the subject dealt with here has attracted attention of some other scholars as well. The author of this study would like to affirm in this context that the concept of nescience is so inextricably related to all other concepts in the systems of Indian philosophy, specially in Vedanta, that in course of making a thorough study of any of their problems one has inevitably to touch upon the problem of ne- science in some way or other. Moreover, studies of the same problem do always have the possibility of assuming divergent character as the determining conditions of the subjective approach to and the degree of the objective assimilation of the original texts are bound to differ from one investigator to the other. It is on account of this that the subject still offers a vast scope for further study and reflection which is amply attested by keen interest being simultaneously taken in it by serious researchers of Indian philosophy in distant parts of the globe. Otherwise, how Mr. J. Kattackal a research scholar in London, would write to this author? - "I am engaged in writing a thesis on 'Avidya' or 'Ignorance' in Hinduism. Recently I came to know from Dr. Friedmann that you have written your dissertation on the same topic. I have not finished my thesis. Now I should like to have a look at your thesis, not copy it, but to make sure that I do not repeat what you have said."
