Book Description
Introduction
Rhythm, as the pace of movement of all kinds, characterizes life as a whole. Vertical, horizontal, circular and even simple linear movements have a rhythm. Movement may be automatic, effortless as a seed growing into a plant and the plant into a tree, or deliberate as in the case of human comprising of volition or willingness and its corresponding action. The latter is deliberate, as we can and do change the pace at which we act out the willed or the non-willed, impulsive, instinctive action. At what controlled pace we perform our voluntary and involuntary action shows whether or not we are a wise and developed person. If we react to a provocation immediately without thinking about its consequences or about the causes of provocation, we are not wise. Here we have also not regulated the pace of our reaction in any way and so vitiated the rhythm of provocation and reaction. Chances are that because of this vitiated rhythm we may be held to be unwise in our conduct. On the other hand, if we take time thinking of the nature of causes of provocation and our thinking and then choosing the best possible reaction, we are wise and perhaps civilized too. We can see that in such cases as this one too rhythm, involved in the action and reaction, is consciously regulated. The rhythm of the heartbeat is regulated not by us but by the laws of Nature. Rhythm in Indian Classical Music is like the former -regulated by the principles of aesthetics. Here it is kept in mind that rhythm is to be so regulated as to always give the musician as well as the audience what Immanuel Kant has called "aesthetic delight".
