Preface
The following three lectures were given on 4th, 5th and 6th February, 1981 as the Late Prof. T. Balakrishna Nair Memorial Endowment Lectures at the Madras University. During the last three decades, significant discoveries have been made regarding the Chalcolithic and the Megalithic Cultures of penin-sular India, and it was thought proper to bring together and present this data to the world of scholars. Prof. T. Balakrishna Nair Memorial Lectureship offered this opportunity. In a large measure the credit of these discoveries goes to the Deccan College Research Institute, Pune. The first lecture takes a review of the work done so far and the nature of new data or new approach involed in each excavation. The second spells out the cultural personality of the Chalcolithic habitations and the last that of the Megaliths. There is a short resume which focuses the attention of scholars on the problem which need solution. I am indeed grateful to the authorities of the Madras University for inviting me to deliver these lectures. To Prof. K. V. Raman. Head of the Dept. of Ancient History and Archaeology. Madras University, I am beholden for his manifold courtesies. I also thank the Rathnam Press, Madras-1, for printing this monograph as carefully as possible. Last but not the least, I am thankful to all my colleagues in my Department and scholars from the Archaeological Survey of India and the Universities for permitting me to draw upon their researches.
