About The Author

 

Prof. Lokesh Chandra is currently the Director of the International Academy of Indian Culture which is a premier research institution for Asian cultures. He has been President of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and Chairman of the Indian Council of Historical Research. He is a well-known historian and a renowned scholar of Tibetan, Mongolian and Sino-Japanese Buddhism. He has also served as a member of the Indian Parliament. In 2006 he was recognized with India's Padma Bhushan award. He is the son of the world-renowned scholar of Oriental Studies and Linguistics Prof. Raghuvira. Starting with an understanding of the most ancient of India's spiritual expression en-shrined in the Vedic tradition, he has moved on to the interlocution between India, Tibet, Mongolia, China, Korea, Japan, South East Asia, and the Indo-European languages. He has studied over twenty languages of the world. He has to his credit 626 works and text editions.

Reminiscences of the life and work of Prof. Raghuvira by his son Prof. Lokesh Chandra begin with a sketch of family history, his fascination by the perfect edition of the Gana-ratna-mahodadhi printed in England became as an inspiration to study Indology in London, besides Indo-European linguistics and modern Lithuanian where Rigvedic dhend are alive as daina. He studied Mongolian as the Mongols were the only Asians to have ruled in Europe. Did his first doctorate at Utrecht and the second at the SOAS London. Headed the Sanskrit Department at the Sanatan Dharma College, Lahore. Founded the International Academy of Indian Culture on 1 Jan 1934. Started the Journal of Vedic Studies and Panjabi Prakash in Gurumukhi script. Received two Japanese students to study Sanskrit in India for the first time inspite of the 1400 years of Indo-Japanese cultural nexus. Led a nation-wide campaign for Hindi. Created a comprehensive Indian administrative and scientific terminology of 150,000 technical terms with the support of the Govt. of Madhya Pradesh from 1947 onwards. A substantive part has become the integral vocabulary of India's languages, like Sansad for Parliament. Visited Europe to collect dictionaries of scientific subjects in around a hundred disciplines. Started the Satapițaka series for editions of texts and scientific studies of countries with a shared cultural hegemony with India, like Tibetan, Mongolian, Chinese, Japanese, Old Javanese and Uigur Turkish. European scholars came to the Academy to cooperate: "The number of publications is amazing not only in quantity but also in quality" (Prof. J.G.de Casparis). Prof. Raghuvira visited China in 1955, and brought back ten tons of culture. Prime Minister Chou En-lai said: "You are the Xuan-zang of India", and ordered "Give all”
