Proper diagnosis is the key to a successful clinician. An accurate understanding of the clinical condition guides physicians toward appropriate and beneficial healthcare decisions. When the diagnosis of a disease is correct, its management is half done. Roganidana is the subject that deals with the means and methods to arrive at an Ayurvedic diagnosis. This includes understanding the risk factors, the pathogenicity, the prodromal signs, the clinical features, the different types, the complications, and the prognosis of diseases. These topics are covered in Paper II (Vyadhi Vigyan, contemporary understanding and updates) of Roga Nidana evam Vikruti Vijnana subject (Ayl G-RN) in the II professional of BAMS course, as per the revised curriculum of NCISM (2023).
Roga sangraha is the second book in the Slokavali series on Roganidana. Unlike Paper I of AyUGRN, all the classical Ayurvedic texts had dedicated a separate volume named Nidanasthana exclusively to describe the contents of Paper II. As the name suggests, the book is a compendium of those diseases, the management of which comes under the syllabus of the subject Kayachikitsa during the final professional of the UG course. It includes only diseases mentioned in the Ayurvedic literature; though the syllabus also consists of those from modern literature. Fresh learners are urged to understand the literal meaning of the sloka before memorizing them because comprehension and interpretation of the content are the specific learning objectives envisioned in the competency-based curriculum introduced by NCISM.
Though the book primarily follows Charaka Samhita, references from other authors among the Brhattrayees have been included so that the learner can understand differences of opinion, if any. This would benefit all learners irrespective of the regional differences in the principal text followed for their Ayurveda education. Care was taken to include a few relevant explanations on the bare slokas by the commentators. Besides, relevant shlokas from other texts like Madhava Nidana, Hareeta Samhita, and Gadanigraha were also included. Hence, the book would be a ready reference on classical references on Ayurvedic diseases for the PG scholars in Roganidana and Kayachikitsa.
