Book Description
About the CD

In all classical Indian art forms, from painting and sculpture to theatre dance and music, rasa or the flavour of emotion or feeling plays and important part. It is the essence of the communication between the artist or performer and his audience, evoking response and participation. Ancient treatises define major emotions or human modes, from the comic to the brave; but perhaps the most celebrated and widely-known in Shringar, the romantic sentiment descriptive of the many faces of love – an emotion hauntingly expressed through music.

In the mode of classical Indian ragas, some are intrinsically lyrical and romantic because of their note structures. Others can be made so through the artiste’s approach and his choice of composition the gat or bandish, through which he chooses to spontaneously interpret and improvise the raga. There are also certain forms like thumri, which by their very nature lend themselves to the romantic mood.

In this compilation or Romantic Raga, we present for your listening pleasure, a selection of ragas both instrumental and vocal. We have chosen a variety of forms not only in the classical style (Raga Dhani, Raga Manjh Khammaj, Raga Sohini) but also thumri (Pilu), tarana (in Raga Yaman), and seasonal sawani the light classical song the evokes the magic of the rains here interpreted in Mishra Des.
