The name of Sawai Jai Singh has been perpetuated by the new capital which he founded. It was originally called Jainagar and afterwards Sawai Jaipur, which has now been shortened into Jaipur. After his return from the capture of Thun (1723 AD), Jai Singh lived for four years at Delhi and Mathura, making pilgrimages to the Ganges and the other Hindu holy places, the holy land of Mathura. In 1725 he was busy creating his first astronomical observatory in the suburb of Jaisinghpura, west of Shah- Jehan's city now known as Delhi. From there he issued orders to his officers in Amber to build a palace (Jai Niwas) on the site which he chose for his new capital while hunting, he sent the plans to his officers for the construction of this new palace.
