Book Description
About the Book
The traditional art of Ikat weaving has travelled across land and sea from Malaysia, and the Sambalpuri Ikat is one of the best-kept secrets of Odisha. The iconic motifs and mathematical precision of the designs, traced by feathery outlines of white with extravagantly contrasting colours are only achievable by enormous labour and creativity, which Sarita Mishra has documented in this volume from years of research. Highlighting the traditional handloom industry, the varied raw materials, weaving techniques and process, the finished products, the challenges faced by the artisans and initiatives for sustainability at play, the resplendent accompanying photographs pay an invigorating tribute to the steadfast hardwork of generations of numerous craftsmen.

Introduction
The state of Odisha abounds with a rich cultural heritage. The Jagannath Dham or Jagannath cult of Puri is world-renowned for the worship of Jagannath and the very unique festival of Rath Yatra. Odisha's tremendous contribution in the field of science & technology (Abdul Kalam Island, formerly known as Wheeler Island, at Chandipur for its missile testing facility, numerous industrial plants, etc.), Odissi dance, cuisine, handicrafts, and temple architecture at Puri, Sun temple at Konark and the Lingaraj temple at Bhubaneswar speaks volumes about the glory, cultural heritage and the superb skill & craftsmanship of the various master craftsmen in these creative endeavours Odisha is predominantly an agricultural economy Nevertheless, a craft economy also co-exists which is marked by unique diversity. Next to agriculture, handicraft is a major source of livelihood to some distinct occupational groups in the state. Under the shadow of informal economy, it continues to provide primary and supplementary livelihood to millions of people with a unique set of artistic skills passed on from generation to generation. The state is a traditional producer of Tassar since time immemorial. In ancient time, hand-woven Tassar textiles was one of the major export itens which was regarded as royal adornment in Europe. The state, once known for the greatest maritime power in the eastern coast of India in ancient time, had a flourishing trade with Asian and European countries Unfortunately, during the colonial rule, Odisha's handloom sector began to languish with the invasion of British made clothes. The weaver community of the state were almost reduced to penury, it is said that in order to exercise monopoly over the Odisha textiles, the colonials also resorted to the inhuman act of severing the fingers of many skilled handloom weavers. However, post-independence, the handloom sector in the state was revamped and thereby got a fresh lease of life with systematic planning and policies of the Government.
