Book Description
Introduction

Religious thinking is always dynamic. It is not dead and inert. It must respond to the demands of time. The age-old religious thinking has undergone changes in the present conditions. It is interesting for a scholar to study how religious thinking has undergone metamorphosis. These considerations have made it imperative to see how age-old thinking has given way to modern secular thoughts from time to time. This book is an attempt to study the secular trends in the religious philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi. Mahatma Gandhi has been a thinker of the modern age who tried to interpret religion in such a way as will be in keeping with the present day scientific trends. The present day thinking is characterized by Secular ways. The belief in the supernatural is regarded as outdated. Such thinking is corroding age-d religious beliefs and an atmosphere of restlessness has been created among religious thinkers in India as well as in other countries. A number of studies have been undertaken in recent years on Secularism. Dr. B. G. Tiwary's book on 'Secularism and Materialism in Modern India' is perhaps the first adventure undertaken by an Indian author. This book discusses the impact of Secularism on Modern India and there is a historical study of modern materialism and its influence on Indian thought. In a small compass the book outlines the impact of secularism and materialism on Indian thought. The treatment is historical and naturally brief. G. I. Godwin's Indian Religions at the Crossroads is a plea for the religious who lives his life in commitment to values. It is about the religious life in contemporary Indian sociological and cultural perspective. It deals with secularization and traditional values. Vernon Pratt's 'Religion and Secularization' discusses the meaning of religious language. He also considers the theologians like Paul Van Buren and John Robinson who give a secular meaning to Christianity. Thus he is concerned with western thinkers only Sebastian Karotemprel's 'God and Secular man' discusses Newman's approach to the problem of God and compares Newman's position with the present day secular humanism. Newman's liberal humanism, according to the author, may be taken as an answer to the atheistic humanism of the present day. There are a number of works on the philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi. There are works on the various aspects of Gandhian thought but there has not been any work on dealing with the religious philosophy and the secular trend in his thinking. We find that very little has been written on secular trends in the Indian religions. The present book is a modest attempt to fulfill the need of such a treatment. Mahatma Gandhi has not developed his religious thought systematically and has not said anything about the secular trend himself. But the atmosphere in which he breathed and did his thinking was surcharged with the spirit of science. Secular trend of thought had begun asserting themselves. His religious philosophy is very much alive to these forces. I have, therefore, tried to present his religious philosophy systematically. I have also analysed his religious thinking to show the secular trends in him. These secular elements are intermingled in his thought replete with spiritualistic tradition. The secular trends have, therefore, to be deciphered from their religious thinking. The present work, therefore, is analytical and critical. This book, however, doesn't claim to be a completely exhaustive study of all the varied aspects of the philosophy of religion of Mahatma Gandhi. The writer has chosen certain themes of religion that struck her as important for the study of secular trends in the religious philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi. The writer begs to be pardoned for having neglected certain topics which in the eyes of others may be considered important for such a book. This book has been divided into six chapters. The first chapter is introductory in nature. It tries to analyse the various senses in which the term 'Secularism' is used and then tries to ascertain the senses in which the present work has to be taken. It also distinguishes between secularism and secular trends. The second chapter provides a bird's eye survey of secular trends present in the ancient Indian thought. Such a survey has been necessary because Gandhiji has relied heavily.

About The Book

The present book is analytical and critical. It is also exhaustive. The author has analysed secularism in different ways and then lighted on Gandhian Secularism. The book deals with Gandhian Secularism on the religion view of Gandhi. In fact, the author wants to establish Gandhian Secularism is a subject of religious philosophy. This book is a comparative study on secularism too. It also presents a bird's eye view on secularism from the ancient Indian Test to Tagore. But the author emphasies that Gandhian secularism with the foundation of religion must prove a significant weapon of curbing moral and spiritual bankrupty in the 21st century through out the world.
