Professor Amitabha Bhattacharyya passed away on 16th January 2004 after a period of prolonged illness. In his death, we have lost one of the most dependable scholars on the textual and inscriptional sources on ancient and early medieval India. Professor Bhattacharyya was not a prolific author. He set for himself a rigorous academic standard. His writings bear the stamp of originality and meticulous attention to subtle details. Six essays presented here represent a segment of Amitabha Bhattacharya's fine and mature scholarship.
