The present volume is a fairly representative collection of m papers on national income and allied subjects published under my sole authorship Consequently, it excludes all my papers on the subject which were written in collaboration with one or more colleagues, and some of the papers missed are important in my view Thus An estimate of tangible wealth in India (with NSR. Sastry) On the validity of NSS estimates of consumption expenditure (with GS Chatterjee) of Economic accounts for developing countries (with Uma Dutta Ray Chaudhury and DSP Rao) are not in this volume A complete list of my scientific publications appended at the end of this book will help the readers to locate these papers Secondly, the papers on subjects other than national income cannot obviously find a place here and these could also be traced through the appended list of publications In this list apart from books and papers, I have included the published abstracts but I have excluded reviews forewards, etc which cannot have any claim to originality.
In subjects like national income, many anonymous economists and statisticians often take enormous pains to produce the estimates while the successful writers of papers frequently only makes ingenuous use of these estimates As in the case of icebergs, what is seen above the water is not distinct from what remains submerged and if what is visible has some usefulness and appeal, then the major share of credit should go to what remains below the surface and is invisible But the failure to make cogent use of the available material is to be squarely attributed to the author.
Some of the ideas incorporated in papers included in the present volume, for example on monetization or areal distribution have subsequently been analysed more competently by young research workers unacquainted with me This is the highest reward a research worker could hope to get and my thanks and good wishes to them My thanks are also due to my erstwhile colleagues in the Central Statistical Organisation and Indian Statistical Institute who belonged to the teams in which I worked Finally. I must thank Susanta Ghosh. Registrar Centre for Studies in Social Sciences. Calcutta, who made publication of this volume possible and Arun Ghosh. Librarian of the Centre, who prepared the copy for the press.
