The Vishnu Sahasranama summarizes the attributes and divine qualities of God in 1,000 names. It serves as a mini-treatise on Advaita philosophy. It is said that Adi Sankaracharya initially intended to write a commentary on the Lalita Sahasranama, but his disciple repeatedly brought him the Vishnu Sahasranama three times in a row. As a result, he decided to comment on this text first. In the Mahabharata, Yudhishthira leams the Vishnu Sahasranama from his dying grandfather, Bhishma. The Vishnu Sahasranama is referred to as ""Bhishmena Kathita"" and ""Vyasena Grathita,"" meaning it was narrated by Bhishma and documented by Vyasa. Veda Vyasa recorded the words of Bhishma in beautiful poetry.
