This comprehensive volume explores the diverse lifestyles, social structures, and challenges faced by these indigenous communities across the nation.
Through scrupulous research and firsthand accounts, the book uncovers the unique identities and contributions of various tribes, highlighting their resilience in the face of modernization and social change. It examines key issues such as environment, cultural preservation, social structure and houses, demography, appearance, socio-economic development, and other intriguing facts providing a critical lens on the policies and practices affecting tribal populations.
Shreya Singh, an undergraduate student at Isabella Thoburn College, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh (India), explores how physiographic features influence human behaviour. Her academic pursuits are deeply entrenched in geography and psychology disciplines, which enthral her by exploring physical terrains and human behaviour. Genotypically, espousing a resolute and unwavering commitment to education and its principles, she has been drawing experiences in peer teaching by crafting and discussing the review articles during her curriculum and participating in symposiums, and aspires to broaden her academic odyssey by pursuing a research program in sedimentary geochemistry. She has a keen interest in the scholarly realm of rock formations, geochemical analysis, human health, and behaviour; beyond that, she has indulged her artistic inclinations.
Rooted in a prototypical North Indian upbringing, Singh cultivated an appreciation for art, rhythm, and expressions. Despite her aversion to history and literature, learning English and German during her school years expanded her cultural horizons, sparking a fascination with their art and cultural paradigms and fuelling her insatiable curiosity, Eurocentric. Her creative spirit defies conventional boundaries.
Culture functions as the bedrock of society, personifying collective identity, values, and shared experiences. Through my betrothment in both artistic and scientific realms, I have come to appreciate that culture goes beyond mere reflection of society; the dynamic force shapes and enriches the very quintessence of a nation's character. Culture profoundly has nurtured mental health through communal and holistic practices like in tribal societies, fostering a sense of belonging identity. Through art, the heartfelt richness of culture is brought to life, illuminating the labyrinthine collage of human experience, and the scientific study of these communities, through anthropology, territorial integration and control, and economics, offering valuable insights into the environmental and societal factors that shape their way of life.
Art, in any form, is a celebration and a reflection of our shared journey. It portrays the courage of historical epochs, offering solace in times of turmoil, and bridges disparate worlds. From the delicate strokes of a painter's brush to the evocative strains of a musician's melody, art captures the essence of humanity. In the same way, the study of anthropology and geography unravels the maze-like layers of cultural and environmental influences, deepening our understanding of these communities. This fusion of artistic expression and scientific inquiry has guided my art and human geography work.
One such community being the exponent of these expressions, could be tribes. During my academic pursuits, particularly within human geography, I was captivated by the winding narratives of India's diverse tribal communities. This inspired me to present an all-embracing account, uniting the myriad threads of India's tribal inlaid into a unified whole.
So, with the encouragement of my teachers and the unwavering support of my seniors, I climbed abroad on creating this book, a detailed exploration, of the anthropology of India's tribes. With the aim initially to create a book providing a holistic overview of these communities, with complete detailed maps, insightful commentary, and also, maintaining a deep respect for their unique contributions, we tried to present a panoramic view of tribal cultures, celebrating their traditions while acknowledging the complexities of their histories.
Inspired by the philosophy that art can serve as a therapeutic tool, this work is designed as an academic resource and a beacon of understanding and empathy. I felt the need to scrabble about the unique fragmented and scattered culture of the tribal community of India.
As you journey through the pages of this book, may you find inspiration in storytelling, comfort in the fusion of diverse cultural expressions, and even discover insights into scientific facts, anthropology and geopolitics woven throughout.
With gratitude, a spirit of discovery, and just a hint of humour...
In the modern world, when the technological gap is quite remarkable, what eventually decides the development of different classes of society is their strength and the magnitude of their performance and relationship in society. This study of the tribes is not only essential but necessary, particularly in a large and developing country like India, which has unique features in terms of its physiography, ethnicity, statehood, etc.
I appreciate the efforts of Ms. Shreya Singh to bring forward different dimensions of the tribes of India. The framework, maps, and pictorial presentation are to be applauded. In this book, an attempt has been made to balance oversimplification and over-elaboration to present the essential aspects of the tribal population. German Geographer and Ethnographer Friedrich Ratzel once said, 'Culture is the history of mankind; wherever a man goes, his culture also comes with him'. This book highlights the uniqueness of different tribes.
The writer has assembled the geographic integrity of different parts of the country by exploring the lives of the tribes nearby. The personal opinions, habits, quirks, and beliefs of the tribes show a greater community of traditions.
The long bibliography list shows her sincere efforts and knowledge about the tribes. The vast arena which she presented will be of great benefit to the students. Even researchers and other scholars will find the basis for their work. The distinctive variants and the general capacity for complex social existence among the tribes could be the backplate for further studies.
Once again, I wish her all success and congratulations on writing this book at this juncture of her academic journey, where she stands just a year shy of leaving her teens and the threshold to the cusp of her twenties, while children her age hardly think in this direction. My blessings in the future endeavors ahead in her life. I hope the book will go a long way in meeting the needs of all concerned.
