Usha Dayal Kumar daughter of Padmashree Yogeshwar Dayal, was born in Haveli Raja Jugal Kishore in Chandni Chowk and experienced the life style and the manner of celebrating festivals in these beautiful mansions. Her father, scion of an aristocratic family of Delhi, revived the famous event 'Phool Waalon ki Sair in 1961, and now she is organising the festival of flower sellers. Ms. Kumar has also written a book on Phool Waalon Ki Sair'. She studied at Modern school, Barakhamba road and did her Bachelor of Arts from Indraprastha College and then passed her LL.B. from Delhi university. At present she is practicing at Delhi High Court. Keenly interested in heritage and culture the author has founded a society 'Heritage and Culture Forum' and has filed a number of Public Interest Litigation petitions about the pathetic condition of the monuments in Delhi. Ms. Kumar is a staunch traditionalist. She loves Delhi the old Delhi, its monuments, lanes and bye lanes, food, jewellery and traditions, in fact any thing and every thing about Delhi. She says her love for Delhi is the driving force behind the writing of this book as she wanted the Dilli of her times, forever alive in her memory, to be preserved and shared.
Traditions of DELHI: This book is a treasure trove of a culture of Delhi now almost extinct. It gives a rare insight into the famous Haveli Culture of old Delhi, once the habitat of the aristocracy of the city. The beauty of manners, values, refinement, and strict upbringing are described in detail to highlight the distinct character of the original inhabitants. It showcases rituals and ceremonies such as weddings and family celebrations through a depiction of the 'solah shringaar' - costumes, jewellery, floral adornments and ethnic makeup of those times. It also contains rare secret recipes of a dying cuisine, without onion or garlic, orally shared through family stories. The traditions of these magnificent, ancient havelis are a living heritage for future generations.
