Dr. S.Balachandra Rao(b.1944) is Hon. Director, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's Gandhi Centre of Science and Human Values, Bangalore. He retired as Principal and Professor of Mathematics from the National College, Bangalore after 35 years service of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students and guiding Ph.D. Candidates. Currently Dr. Rao is Hon. Professor at the National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS) and Member of the Research Council of the National Commission for History of Science, Indian National Science Academy (INSA), New Delhi. Dr. Rao has been working on research projects in Indian Astronomy under INSA., New Delhi, since 1993 and has authored several books on Indian Astronomy in English and Kannada.

About the Author-2
Dr. Padmaja Venugopal is Professor and Head, Department of Mathematics at S.J.B. Institute of Technology, Bangalore. She has been working in the field of Indian Astronomy for the past a decade and a half. She has presented papers at various conferences and published a few papers (jointly) in IJHS and other journals. She worked on the INSA research project. "Comparative Study Of Planetary Models In Respect Of Epicycles In Classical Indian Astronomy vis-à-vis Ptolemaic And Copernican Models."

Foreword
During this International Year of Astronomy (IYA-2009), authors Dr. S.Balachandra Rao and Dr. Padmaja Venugopal have brought out their second title, "TRANSITS OCCULTATIONS in Indian Astronomy". In fact, this book is a sequel to their recently published title, "ECLIPSES in Indian Astronomy." This book is designed to provide an insight into the contributions of classical Indian astronomers through the ages. The authors have evolved and presented improved siddhantic procedures (ISP), for computation of Transits and Occulations, which yield results that compare well with those of modern procedures. The authors humbly acknowledge that their updated procedures for these phenomena are inspired by the valuable papers of the great savant of Indian astronomy, the late Prof. T.S.Kuppanna Sastry who was a veteran Sanskritist and a deep scholar in mathematical astronomy. In fact, the book is dedicated to the memory of Prof. Sastry. Besides procedures for computations, described in a simple style intelligible to the present day students, the authors have discussed interesting topics like, "From the yellowed pages", "Venus transits of 1874 and 1872", "Narasinga Rao's observations of 1874 transit", "Samanta Chandrasekhara Simha on 1874 transit", "Legentil's expeditions to India for 1761 and 1769 transits" besides other chapters on classical and improved siddhantic procedures for transits and occulations. Further, highly informative Appendices provide lots of useful data on transits and occultations. These are bound to motivate students to pursue studies in astronomy with greater interest. I congratulate the authors for their thoughtful contribution of these twin titles to popularizing the great Indian astronomical heritage. I am glad that the recently published book "ECLIPSES in Indian Astronomy" has already received high appreciation from eminent scientists and scholars like Dr. Jayant Narlikar.

Preface
It gives us great pleasure in offering this new title, "TRANSITS AND OCCULATIONS in Indian Astronomy" to the student community as well as to the discerning readers interested in astronomy and the Indian contribution to the field. In fact this title is a sequel to our earlier book, "ECLIPSES in Indian Astronomy", This book is presented as our humble contribution in the context of 2009 being declared as the International Year of Astronomy. Among the various topics related to transits and occultations discussed in this book, the improved siddhantic procedures (ISP) provide results comparable to those based on modern astronomical procedures. For evolving these updated procedures our unique source of inspiration has been the dedicated contribution of the late Prof. T.S.Kuppana Sastry (1900-1982). We have great pleasure in dedicating our work, as a token of our deep gratitude, to the sacred memory of Prof. T.S.Kuppana Sastry. For the traditionally trained crudition of Prof.Sastry, his highly rational, objective and scientific approach is truly refreshing. The chapters on the transit expeditions of the French astronomer Le Gentil and the observations of our own Indian astronomers Sri Cintamani Ragoonatha Chary, Ankitam Narsinga Rao and Samanta Chandrasekhara Simha would surely inspire our modern students. In the International Year of Astronomy-2009, we sincerely hope that our discerning readers especially students will get inspired to pursue astronomy as also studies in the rich scientific heritage of our great nation vigorously with greater inquisitiveness and rightful national pride. We are highly grateful to Professor B.V.Sreekantan for blessing us with his encouraging Foreword. We are indebted to the members of the Executive Committee of the Gandhi Centre for their continuous support. We record our deep appreciation to Sri V.Ganesha and Sri S.Prasannakumar of the Gandhi Centre as also to the DTP specialist Sri C.Gangadhara and the printers for their sincere cooperation in bringing-out this book in record time.
