White Thile most of the retellings of the Mahabharata start at the beginning and end at the end, this is not how the Mahabharata itself is structured. In my exploration of the original epic, I realised that even the back stories have back stories, and a lot of importance is attached to cause and effect, and why events happened the way in which they did. This aspect intrigued me and I paid attention to this non-linear flow rather than trying to fit it into a standard chronology. I have stayed true to this design and every chapter begins in the battlefield, and then journeys back to connect the dots to a different timeline, lifetime or even realm.
The epic literature is a universe in itself with complex characters and intricate stories. While there may be some familiarity with the characters and stories of the Mahabharata, this novel dives deeper to understand why the characters were the way they were and why they acted the way they did. By dwelling on the why of it all, this novel attempts to uncover the deeper intent of the epic itself. Was it just a straightforward story about two sets of warring cousins, or was there more to it than that?
