Book Description
Preface
Most lay persons in Indian culture usually think of yajnya (also spelled and pronounced as yajya, yajña, yajna, or yagya) as an act of performing a fire ceremony by lighting fire in the havan kund (a sacred fire pot) and chanting select mantras, however, the fire ceremony is a limited part of the yajnya and is called havan, agnihotra, or homa. Yajnya, in fact means virtuous conduct in all aspects of life, it is performing virtuous karmas at all three levels: thoughts, words and deeds, and helping others achieve the same goal. The physical fire lighted during the havan ceremony is a reminder that we should kindle and enlighten our soul i.e. our inner spiritual self by praying and meditating to Eeshvara/God and doing virtuous deeds. Just as the physical fire in havan kund or yajnya vedi (fire altar) in burning ghee and sämigri (mixture of fragrant herbs and incense) purifies and brightens the surrounding environment, similarly we should purify and enlighten ourselves by performing virtuous karmas/deeds and we should do selfless deeds as a service for the community to make the community a better and more virtuous place for everybody.
