Weather is important to man for it determines his habits and habitat. The house he lives in, the food he eats and the clothes he wears are all fashioned by the weather. Land use, farming, water management, industries, travel, recreation; in short, almost every human activity is weather sensitive. Understanding weather is, therefore, vital in every human endeavour.
Climate has played a decisive role in the evolution of our ecosystem. The life forms which evolved in each and every period of time were best suited to the then climatic regime. The world's population is rising fast while the re-sources are dwindling. Optimum and judicious utilisation of available resources and conservation of the ecosystem are imperative for improving the quality of life. Hence climatic information must form an essential input in the planning process.
Interested laymen find it hard to come by suitable reading material on weather and climate. This book, Ways of the Weather, explains the how and why of climate and presents an overall picture of the atmospheric science in easy language. The book also provides an overview of the state of the art in weather observation and forecasting and deals with atmospheric process, system, weather generation, and seasons, as well as the impact of weather on life and economy.
This book is an abridged version of my earlier book, Our Weather, published by the National Book Trust, India in 1989. The text, however, has been restructured and the language simplified. It is hoped that this book would help you in understanding the ways of the weather and the rationale of climate.
Climatological data, tables and charts published by the India Meteorological Department have been utilised in writing this book. Specific references have not been cited in respect of many concepts and conclusions which have gained wide acceptance in the theory and practice of meteorology.
This is the second edition of 'Ways of the Weather' (1993). Errors noticed in the previous prints have been corrected and a Glossary added. The cover page diagram has been changed and the other diagrams improved.
I would like to thank Ms Kanchan Wanchoo Sharma for her promptness in effecting the corrections and improving the diagrams. I am also grateful to the National Book Trust, India for its support.
