Book Description
About the Author
Dr. Belle Monappa Hegde (Dr. B.M.Hegde) was born in a village near Udupi in erstwhile South Canara Dist., of the then Madras Province, on the 18" August 1938. His initial education was in his own village, but basically at home. His main teacher, however, was his own mother who taught him the essentials of Indian scriptures, culture and also the languages. Single-minded devotion and tenacity took him to the coveted position of the Vice-Chancellor of the famed Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), University. Manipal. He is on the Governing bodies of many prestigious institutions in India and abroad. A visiting Professor in almost all countries except the South American continent, he also has been considered a considerate and competent examiner for Graduate and Post Graduate medical students. Dr. B.M.Hegde (85) Professor of Medicine, cardiologist, scientist and author is also Chairman of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mangalore Kendra, Mangalore, Awards and Prizes: Unsought honours have come to him from far and wide. They are too many to enumerate. Starting from the Gold medal and prize from the Madras University for his MBBS, he has bagged the 'Distinguished Physician of India Award". Many Gold medals have come his way for papers published, talks delivered, and orations given. The best of them that he keeps on his work-table is the plaque from his old students from all over the world that reads "To the Superb Teacher". Nani Palkivala calls him the "Cardiologist with a Heart". He is the recipient of 'Dr. B.C. Roy Award' in the category of Eminent Medical Teacher (1999), Padma Bhushan award (2010) and Padma Vibhushan award (2021), the 2" highest civilian Award of India.

Foreword
Bhavan's Gandhi Centre of Science of Human Values has become increasingly popular with the student community because of its researched publications on the culture and values as also on account of the Student's interface Programmes conducted in different Educational Institutions both in Bangalore and outside. The central theme of the publication project is Gandhian wisdom on various issues of contemporary relevance. But it is considered essential to include many other themes and subjects which have social and scientific relevance. Gandhiji himself said that he welcomed advancement of science and technology for solving our problems. That is the reason why some of the outstanding scientists of the country were approached for writing about the achievements in the respective area of their specialisation. I was happy to see the enthusiastic response from them to write for the young on scientific themes. I am grateful to the scholars who have obliged the Bhavan's Gandhi Centre with their contribution. I do earnestly hope that the young people including students will benefit reading these short treatises. I am particularly beholden to Dr. B.M.Hegde for writing out the present little volume on Wisdom of the Human Body.

Introduction
Man has lived on this planet for well over 9,00,000 years in 50,000 generations. Obviously, this fascinating machine, the human body, is built to last as also to self-correct most of the deviations due to external causes. If this were not true we would have been extinct like the Dinosaurs long, long ago! There is an elaborate defence mechanism in the body called the immune system. The latter has many types of armed forces to attack any invader or to rectify internal derangements, viz.: cellular, the harmoral, and the vascular defences; in addition there is the autonomic nervous system that comes to help in any crises. Our environment, the cosmos, is a vital factor in keeping us alive and kicking. Since man is a part of the macrocosm, he should depend on the same for sustenance. This keeps changing and therefore, makes the human body adjust to the changing needs in the environment. The in-built corrective system, mentioned above, comes in handy there as well. Our ancestors passed on some intelligence to us through our genes to take mankind forward. The genes could also mutate (change) in response to environmental changes to keep us going even in adverse circumstances. More than them all, it is the human mind (consciousness) that makes or breaks the body and its attendant functions. A tranquil mind, filled with universal love, is an insurance against illness and disability. Healthy body that lasts as long as it is destined to, depends on all these factors in tandem. Unfortunately, modern medical systems, that have gone to the market place riding piggyback on technology in the last five decades, have resulted in enhancing anxiety levels in society. Common man believes that one has to depend heavily on medical technology for survival. This latter, in its turn, makes happy living impossible.
