Book Description

Preface This is a collection of fifteen essays most of which were published at different times in different journals. Some were originally composed in English, which have been included with slight modifications. The articles on the Mahābhārata and on 'The Südra and Women' in early classical Sanskrit Literature were very kindly translated by my friend Sri Asit Ghosh. He himself offered to contribute this as a labour of love and I do not know how to thank him. The article on the Girl Child has been translated by my one-time pupil and then colleague at the Jadavpur University, Dr. Bijaya Goswami, I take this opportunity to thank her for the trouble she took. I myself translated those on 'Sati', 'Dowry and Stridhana' etc. The rest were originally in English, published in the Economic and Political Weekly, Journal of Indian Philosophy and some as monographs in various other periodicals and broadsheets. Obviously there is no one thread running through these articles making it a coherent monograph; the connecting link is the theme: women and society in ancient India. Each of the articles seeks to throw some light on some aspect of either ancient Indian women or some social attitude to caste, the concept of peace, or fatalism.
