Book 2: Education and Special Needs
Book 3: Child and Youth Empowerment & Yoga Techniques
Book 4: Asana Pranayama Mudra Bandha
This four-book set Yoga Education for Children and Youths is the result of more than half a century of experience by Rishi Arundhati and other qualified Bihar Yoga teachers in developing and propagating ways of introducing the young to the practices and underlying ideas of Satyananda Yoga-Bihar Yoga as developed and taught by Swami Satyananda Saraswati at the behest of his master, Swami Sivananda Saraswati.
In this preface we will first give a brief account of the lifelong association of Rishis Arundhati and Vasishtha with Swami Satyananda and later on with his spiritual successor, Swami Niranjanananda Saraswati, which ultimately resulted in the present four-book set on Yoga Education for Children and Youths, as well as, the definitive set of four volumes presenting the progressive development of Bihar Yoga in Europe by Swami Satyananda from 1968 to 1983 and as recorded, transcribed and documented in Swami Satyananda's own words entitled Satyananda Yoga in Europe: Progressive Insights into Bihar Yoga.
Meeting our master and his mandates to us resulting in both sets of four books.
In 1968, Ríshí Vasishtha was working at the IBM Laboratory in Vienna, Austria, developing ways to define the semantics of high level programming languages. Simultaneously with this scientific work, Rishi Vasishtha had assumed the presidency of the Theosophical Society in Vienna and had lectured for several years on spiritual traditions and particularly on Sanatana Dharma and yoga, having personally memorized the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and practised raja yoga based on these sutras for a period of ten years. Due to the relationship of the Theosophical Society and the Indian Consulate in Vienna, Rishi Vasishtha had previously been requested by the Consulate to permit Ma Yogashakti, the leading disciple of Swami Satyananda at that time, to conduct yoga classes at the Theosophical Society premises. Upon learning from Ma Yogashakti about her master, Rishi Vasishtha and others in Vienna decided to invite Swami Satyananda to Vienna during his proposed world tour in 1968. As a result, Swami Satyananda came to Vienna and Rishis Arundhati and Vasishtha's lifelong association with their master began.
The first mandate to Rishis Arundhati and Vasishtha and its fulfilment.
From the very onset Swami Satyananda never addressed Rishis Arundhati and Vasishtha by their worldly names but only by their spiritual names he had given them at their first encounter. Shortly after this first meeting, Swami Satyananda mandated the two rishis to record, transcribe and publish all his lectures, satsangs and meditations through the organizations he had created in India for the propagation of yoga as mandated by his own mater Swami Sivananda. This mandate was fulfilled by the two rishis and successively led to the publication of the books: Tantra Yoga Panarama (1971) and republished in the Golden Collection 5 in 2013 as Collected Lectures 1968-1970.
Next came the book Light on Yoga (1971) and republished in the Golden Collection 5 in 2013 as Light on Yoga. After this came the book Kundalini Yoga (Austrian Edition 1972, Indian Edition 1973). This material was incorporated in the large book Yoga and Kriya (1981) In 1970, Swami Satyananda asked Rishis Arundhati and Vasishtha to thoroughly examine the first edition of Asana Pranayama Mudra Bandha (1969) abbreviated as APMB, which resulted in a report given to Swami Satyananda concerning errors, especially with regard to illustrations, and suggestions for elaboration and expansion of the material. This report was utilized by Swami Satyananda during the 1970-71 Sannyasa Training Course, the last course conducted personally by him, and the course notes therefrom were used to produce the second edition of APMB in 1973.
Finally, all the lectures and meditations recorded and transcribed by Rishis Arundhati and Vasishtha from 1968 to 1983 were published in a systematic and progressive manner accompanied by an analysis and synopsis of all the material by Rishi Vasishtha in the four-volume set entitled Satyananda Yoga in Europe: Progressive Insights into Bihar Yoga (2013 oversized edition, 2023 revised normal size edition).
This concludes our short discussion of the fulfilment of Rishis Arundhati's and Vasishtha's first mandate from their guru Swami Satyananda.
