Symbols and imagery cannot be understood purely on the level of art criticism, analyzing it on the basis of style, form, compositional elements, color symbolism etc. Its concept overrides the percept. The lotus hand enables one to understand the greatness of the personality of the saint/god. It also helps to meditate and is decorated with auspicious markings. These markings are glories of the hands of the supreme lord. The upper tip of the fingers remains unmasked; the middle has a letter each and the part closest to the palm has a word written in Sanskrit language. The similar letters and words appear on the palm also, amidst other objects. Each object holds a wealth of meaning behind it. The weapons like sword, arrow, club, thunderbolt, elephant goad appear aplenty. The sword is to annihilate the six enemies lust, greed, false ego, illusion, attachment and envy of the devotees into pieces; sword to destroy their miseries of the thunderbolt brings the poverties of devotees to an end. The lotus hand also has a veena, a musical instrument, and a fan, sacrificial alter and some different shaped patterns, which are extremely beautiful. The essence of this work is that it is meant to provide a focus for meditation. The background also has mantras and words, which are full of energy. This kind of meditation aid is on par with yantras and mandalas.
