Narsimha is half-man, half-lion. A gatekeeper of Vishnu had enraged him and was condemned to live out the rest of his life as a demon, subsequently named Hiranyakshyap. He meditated upon Brahma, who granted him a special boon, which was that he could not be injured by any weapon either by man or by animal, by day or by night, inside or outside. He became overconfident and made the life of the gods hell. Vishnu decided to intervene. In the form of a man with the head of a lion (neither animal nor man), he hid in one of the two pillars at the entrance to the house of the demon, Hiranyakshyap, grabbed him at dusk (neither day nor night) on the threshold of his house (neither inside or outside) and mauled him with his claws (without weapons).

Narsimha is shown in this Tantric illustration inscribed inside his yantra.
