Chrysoprase is the most valuable and beautiful cryptocrystalline quartz. It is a rich, highly translucent green, sometimes called apple green. At one time, it was often mistaken for jade and Australian jade is actually chrysoprase. It is lovely in itself and is to be prized for itself. If a thief was sentenced to death and placed a stone of chrysoprase in his mouth, the stone was supposed to help him escape his executioner. Chrysoprase has sometimes been called "victory stone."
