The name garnet comes from the Latin word for pomegranate, because garnet crystals in rocks look like pomegranate seeds. Garnets were extremely important in olden times. They have been found in Egyptian tombs, and the carbuncle that lit Noah's Ark during the flood was a garnet.

Perhaps because of their blood-red color, garnets have long been associated with warriors; both as protective and destructive elements. The crusaders, for instance, decorated their armor with garnets as talismans to prevent harm. In latter-day Asia, garnets were sometimes used for bullets, in the belief that they would increase the severity of a wound.

Garnet is associated with the kundalini-fire (or primal-fire) of transformation, which is the integrating fire that assists the kundalini up the spinal column. It is a stone of passion that sometimes needs to be transformed into the power of purity. It is only with purity of heart that we are able to see God. In the temple of the human body, the sacred spinal fire lies coiled like a snake and is called the "sacred stone." It is awakened and lifted towards the head by the process of transmutation.
