A Rajasthani amulet such as this may be made into several shapes, each of which has a symbolic significance. Here the outer amulet shape is that of a pentagon. The pentagon represents a temple. Some other shapes are the square (house); triangle (shrine); and the hexagon (emerald).

The deity housed in this symbolic temple is Shiva the Destroyer. He holds in the right hand his characteristic trident, and in his left a severed head.
