Once, Savitri, the consort of Brahma, was late for a yagna (ritual sacrifice). Vishnu created another woman called Gayatri to assist Brahma with the rituals. In anger Savitri cursed Vishnu, "Your footprints will be more venerable than your body." And so the footprints of Vishnu, Vishnu-pada, are considered very auspicious, even more than an image of Vishnu himself. When drawn on the walls of a house, they are shown pointing towards the house, symbolizing the arrival of divine grace.
