WATER COLOR ON BOARD (EMBOSSED WITH 24 KARAT GOLD)

The rare dadashabhujadhari Devi Sarasvati. Possessed of (‘dhari’) twelve (‘dadasha’) arms (‘bhuja’), She is seated on a gigantic lotus bloom with petals no less roseate than Her complexion. The stance of the Devi is lalitasana, widely observed in seated iconographies of the Hindu-Buddhist pantheon.

Her face is the very picture of serenity. Underneath long, black lashes She directs a gaze that is all-knowing, all-encompassing, and deeply maternal. Around gorgeous tresses that cascade down Her shoulders, is a garland of fresh mythical flowers of varied hue and colour. In Her twelve hands She bears implements that are reminiscent of multiple Hindu devis (for example, the twin lotuses for Devi Lakshmi and the sugarcane sprig for Devi Rajarajeshvari).

The Devi is housed within a quiet, secluded precinct. Dark, stone floors. A traditional temple-entrance structure seemingly containing the muted glow of Her halo. Ritual implements in the foreground such as a pair of lamps, handheld aratis, conch and holy water and a palteful of offerings.

The Mythology of Saraswati: Goddess of Learning and Creativity

Saraswati, the daughter of Brahma, the creator god, is revered as the embodiment of knowledge and wisdom. Her four hands (in some depictions, twelve) each hold objects representing the different aspects of her divine power: a Veena (a stringed instrument), a mala (rosary), a book, and a kamandalu (a water pot). The Veena signifies the rhythm and harmony of the universe, the mala symbolizes meditation and spirituality, the book represents knowledge and learning, and the kamandalu is a symbol of purity and detachment. Her twelve-armed form showcases her unparalleled mastery over all aspects of creativity and knowledge, underscoring her dominance and divinity. Tales abound about her divine intervention in the lives of sages and poets, guiding them on their paths of enlightenment and creative expression. The goddess is often depicted seated on a lotus, symbolizing her purity, grace and detachment from worldly affairs. This painting beautifully captures all of these symbolic elements, making it a powerful and meaningful piece for any home or temple.
