Born from the ushnisha of Gautama Buddha Himself, Devi Sitapatra is the presiding deity of the Buddhists over protection from adhibhautika dukkha. The Sanskrt-origin name, Sitapatra, translates to ‘white parasol’, indicative of Her gentle yet protective attribute. Because this is a Tiebtan thangka painting, it would be worthwhile to mention that Her Tibetan name is Dukkar.
The complexion of Her long, slender body is as roseate as the petals beneath Her. Black hair, and a dhoti of blue and red silks bring out its beauty. From the bejewelled five-spired crown to the studded back of Her heavenly throne, this padmasana Sitapatra-Dukkar painting bears every hallmark of the authentic Tibetan thangka painting.
Executed on a strip of brocade, thangka paintings such as this one are executed by monk-artists who work with as much skill as shraddha. Note the finesse of the brushstrokes that define the flora and the streams in the background, and the sheer proportion of detail in the foreground.
