Mughal miniature paintings are intimate little pictures that nevertheless fill in entire scope of one's vision. Portrayal of insects is imbued with a charm, a minuteness of observation and an artistic sensibility.

This wonderful butterfly that belongs to the family of Peiridae, is a rare specie i.e. it lives a secluded life and is not a frequent sight. The artist has captured the natural elegance of his subject. It is white in color, as captured here, with stains in the center of the wings, the span of which is 80-90 mm. The body, the wings are executed with care, dainty in its format, elegant in its execution. The wings, the most attractive part of a butterfly, are held together above the body.

Insects and foliage make an attractive composition. In order to give it a realistic pose and to make it seem more natural, the artist has rested it on its food plant, a pretty flower. The flower has also been painted white and against the flat background of deep bottle green, the flower, together with the insect stand out. What impresses one is the loving case taken in the drawing of the delicate flowering plant, which appears so full of life, very much like the insect it hosts.

Islamic influence is evident in the calligraphic writing and the artists desire to decorate the illustration more richly.
