Entomology is the scientific study of insects and related anthropoids. Brilliant, iridescent, fantastically shaped, striped, spotted, glossy, hideous or breathtakingly beautiful but all colorful are these fully metamorphosed insects. With the bewildering kaleidoscope of natural colors, the portrayal of zoological exotica in their full splendor became a passion with some artists.

There is precision in recapturing the exact likeness of this butterfly that belongs to the family of 'nymphalidae', in line and color. It is black with outer third of the wings tawny orange. There are irregular white spots all over. Towards the tip of the upper wing, black with golden dots reappear. The hind wings are silvery white on the underside and have orange markings. The female of this species is black with blue spots. Larval of this butterfly feed on citrus plants, prickly ash and sunflower.

The artist's ingenious compositional technique can be seen here in the way he subordinates the background to the principal subject. The multileaved flowers are in soft pink and white. The leaves are also pale green, almost merging with the background. This subdued palette stands out in sharp contrast to the bright black and orange butterfly.

Several leaves from various Islamic books have examples of aesthetically done calligraphic works. This is one example where black lettering is prominent on gold colored base with tiny red and green leaves and flowers.
