Rajasthan is an arid colorless land. The people of the land make up for it by wearing bright clothes, breaking into festivities and celebrations at any given opportunity. Dance and music is of prime importance in their lives. Their attire, jewellery, festivals and other desert scenes have been captured by artists down the ages in different art forms and different mediums.

Batik, a consecutive process of waxing and dyeing is tedious but the end product is worth all the effort. Seen through a niche are two men playing musical instruments oblivious to the world. That they belong to Rajasthan is evident by the dress: the turban and short, flared kurtas. One of the men, facing the viewer is playing a drum. Technically, this drum is called a 'pakhawaj', having composite heads. It is a North Indian version of the South Indian mridangam. Its sound is deeply resonant and majestic. The other man, shows in profile is playing a wind instrument which produces a very high pitch sound, called 'karna' in some places and 'muri' in others.

This beautiful piece of art is very colourful and has gone through the process of waxing and dyeing as many times as the number of colours. The off white of the background outside the niche shows the magnificent effect of the crackle to its best. The criss-cross of dark lines over a lighter surface is the acme of beauty in this batik work.
