Madhubani paintings go hand in hand with religious depictions. Gods and goddesses of Vedic and Puranic era find a prominent place in their art. Tantrism has also much influenced their thought and art.

This visually bright painting has the ten Mahavidyas, together with their corresponding yantras. The Mahavidyas are tantric deities who represent the ten paths to transcendental knowledge. In order of their representation, they are Kali, Tara, Bhuvaneshwari, Tripura Sundari, Baglamukhi, Chinnamasta, Dhumavati, Matangi, Bhairavi and Kamala. They balance the benevolent and malevolent forms of the goddesses. They all appear with the third eye. Most of them have four arms and are adorned with jeweled crowns. Kali, Tara and Dhumavali have black bodies, probably to stress upon their liminal symbol.

Using a bright colour palette, the artist has limited himself to the prescribed iconography. He also diligently paints the yantra designated to each goddess, below their image, combining the iconic and symbolic visions of the goddess.
