Family : Pyrrhocoridae
Order : Hemiptera

Length : 8-11.5 mm

Recognition marks : Bright red with a prominent white St. Andrew's Cross marking on the front wings.

Habitat : Phytophagous, living on low vegetation, often a pest of cotton, dwarfing the boils and staining th efibers.

Distribition : Georgia, Florida, and the West Indies.

Note : Most species of the family Pyrrhocoridae are marked with bright yellow, red, brown, and white, generally thought to be warning colors. All species in USA are confined to the southern states where they are referred as 'red bugs' or 'cotton statiners'. When they infest cotton, they leave a red stain on the cotton fibers which renders the cotton unsuitable for market.
