Portraiture in miniature painting is considered the most delicate and subtle amongst its branches. In due course, the artist no longer concentrated on action and events; instead what interested him was the revelation and interplay of human personalities.

The figure stands stiffly in the canter with absolutely no background. Subtle allusions to western art can be detected but they are skillfully integrated into the overall regional aesthetics that they are barely noticeable. The face is expressive, yet remains stubbornly conventional. The slender middle-aged man is wearing a knee length tunic decorated with army honors. At the waist, he ties a sash with the end hanging on the side. Over the sash is a belt, the buckle of which has an insignia. The sword is secured with the help of a strong chain. His white, tight trousers are barely visible due to the black wellingtons he is wearing. The turban is neatly tied. All these give the impression of a dignified and disciplined personality. The low-keyed richness of the palette just adds to it.

Stylistically, the artist has used stippling and soft tones of shades for delineating facial features and the three dimensional effect. Fine as a hair, as clear and definite as it is possible for human hand and eye to make it, the line of the features in this portrait is a remarkable piece of execution. Drawing and brushwork is free and spontaneous, giving it a brilliant finish.
