Shah Jahan's patronage to the art of glyptics, intaglio, cameo and other hard stone carvings are well known. Unlike his predecessors, who patronized paintings and brought them to a pinnacle of perfection, Shah Jahan was obsessed with architecture, more so with marble.

Designs of the Mughals and the skill of Rajasthani craftsmen is quite evident in this marble plate in a shamsa pattern. From the central medallion rise the outlines of a daisy. Two floral designs, albeit in same colours, alternately dominate each daisy petal, one ending with a lotus indicating Hindu influence and the other with a rose, a favourite with the Islamic rulers. The corners formed by the Semi-Circular cut of the petals are filled with gold having tiny flowers. Gold is extensively used in the painting, together with other jewel-like colours. The paint is thickly laid, forming a slight relief..

A continuous vine runs around the border branching out flowers of different varieties, in different colours. The drawing is particularly fluid and harmonious and the paint rich and majestic..
