Goddess Rajarajeshwari Tanjore Painting with Teakwood Frame

$1569
Includes any tariffs and taxes

Adi-Shakti, the primordial energy is the source of the powers of all deities. She is Aadya, the first one, Paraamba, the cosmic mother, and Jagadamba, the mother of the entire universe. As the supreme manifestation of Param-Brahma, the form of Devi is often revered as Rajarajeshwari, the queen of kings, who is above all. This majestic roopa of the great goddess is outlined in this antique Tanjore painting, framed with sturdy teakwood and infused with the traditional aesthetics of Thanjavur artworks.

Goddess Rajarajeshwari wrapped in a lovely red sari sits on a regal throne structured in the fashion of a swing, which rests on four divinities whose small images highlight the might of the goddess, in front of whom, even the greatest of all gods are mere attendants. Devi Rajarajeshwari is accompanied by goddesses Lakshmi and Saraswati, whose forms are beautifully delineated by the artists. Imposing columns, arches, and drapes enhance the grandeur of this painting. With her lotus-shaped eyes, which are drawn with a magnificent feel of animation in them, Devi Rajarajeshwari benevolently gazes at her devotees, instilling in the heart a deep sense of reverence for the gracious universal mother.

Each detail is rendered with natural pigments, meticulously mixed and applied by skilled artisans. The rich embellishment of real gold foil lends an ethereal glow, making the divine figures truly radiant and the entire composition shimmer with spiritual luminescence. The use of semi-precious stones, though not explicit in all pieces, is implied in the richness of the colors and the overall opulent finish, contributing to its luxurious feel.

Exquisite Details and Regal Presentation

You’ll appreciate the striking central figure, radiating power and grace, surrounded by attendant figures and celestial motifs. The intricate patterns on the garments, the delicate rendering of facial features, and the symbolic objects held by the deities showcase the unparalleled skill of the artists. The entire tableau is presented within a substantial and handsome teakwood frame, measuring approximately 33 inches in height and 27 inches in width, with a depth of about 4.25 inches, providing a fittingly grand enclosure for this masterpiece. This solid wood frame not only protects the artwork but also enhances its regal presence, adding a touch of natural warmth and sophistication.

A Legacy of Faith and Artistry

This depiction draws from the rich spiritual heritage of India, specifically the veneration of goddesses in the Hindu pantheon. Tanjore paintings are renowned for their vibrant colors, iconic composition, and the rich use of gold leaf, a style that originated in the town of Thanjavur centuries ago. The artistic rendering often portrays deities in serene yet powerful postures, adorned with elaborate jewelry and regal attire, embodying divine attributes and cosmic narratives that have resonated through millennia.

Enduring Beauty and Care

To ensure the lasting brilliance and longevity of this treasure, we recommend gentle dusting with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid direct sunlight and excessive moisture, which can affect the natural pigments and gold leaf. By adhering to these simple care instructions, you will preserve the vibrant colors and luminous gold work for generations to come, allowing this piece to remain a cherished heirloom.

Gilded Elegance: Unraveling the Artistry of Tanjore Paintings

Tanjore painting is a traditional form of art in the South Indian style and was started by the inhabitants of a small town known as Thanjavur of Tamil Nadu. This gives it another name called “Thanjavur painting”. This painting draws its figures, designs, and inspiration from the time when Vedic culture was prevalent in India. Certain remarkable features of a Tanjore painting distinguish it from other paintings. Some of these are pure gold or gold foil coating on gesso work, the use of rich and vivid colors, and the inlay of cut-glass or semi-precious and precious stones. The subjects of most of the Tanjore paintings are Hindu Gods, Goddesses, and saints. The main devotional figure is portrayed in the central portion of the painting and is usually surrounded by various secondary figures.

The process of making a Tanjore painting

The classic Tanjore paintings are done on wooden planks and hence are also referred to as Palagai Padam in South India (Palagai = Wooden plank, Padam = Picture). Creating a masterpiece is never an easy task but the skilled artists of Thanjavur have been following the tradition of making timeless Tanjore paintings for decades.
The making process begins with preparing the wooden board or canvas. The size of the board depends upon the choice of the patron. The next step is to paste cardboard over the wooden board and then a cotton fabric is stretched and pasted upon it using Arabic gum.

Now that the cloth is attached to the wooden panel, a rough sketch of the motifs and figure is drawn onto the fabric. After this, a paste of chalk powder and water-soluble adhesive is evenly applied over the base and smoothed.

Thereafter, the outlines which were made or traced using a stencil are now ready to be beautified and decked with various add-ons. The usual materials for decoration are cut-glass, pearls, semi-precious and precious gems, gold leaf, and laces. 22 or 18 Karat Gold leaves and gems of varied hues are especially inlaid in areas like pillars, arches, walls, thrones, and dresses. In the final step, the rest of the painting is filled with rich and striking colors such as shades of red, blue, and green. Formerly, the artists used natural colors like vegetable and mineral dyes instead of chemical paints. The entire painting is then cleaned and refined to give a flawless finished look.

Since the making of a single piece of Tanjore painting requires a complex and elaborate process, the artists usually take at least one or two months to complete it. The use of pure gold foil and gems for beautification is a characteristic of an authentic Tanjore painting. Due to this, Tanjore paintings last for generations without getting tarnished and are much more expensive than general paintings. Though the art form has undergone various changes and technique modifications over the years, it continues to attract the hearts of art lovers.
