Guru Nanak, founder of the Sikh religion, was born in 1469. In an antagonistic milieu of Hinduism and Islam, he declared that there was only one God, though there were many ways to reach him.

Painted on this canvas is the universally revered image of Guru Nanak. He wears a simple, saffron robe and a head scarf; a shawl covering his shoulders. Dressing reflects the simplicity within. His face shows signs of aging and wisdom. There is a kind of tranquillity in his eyes, wishing to spread the same in the strife ridden world. The white beard, though concealing most of his lower face, not only tell on his age but of years spent on trying to reform the social and religious ways. His right hand is raised in a gesture of blessing.

The artist has made tremendous effort in portraying a near real look. Applying various skin tones, with dashes of pink succeeds in giving a soft and peaceful look on the guru's face. The background remains hazy, with a light halo around Nanak's head.
