The rows depict man and animal belonging to the earth, and fish representing the ocean. While the human figures are abstract and linear in form, the animals and fish are naturalistic and depicted in the profile. This combination of naturalistic and abstract treatment is a significant feature of this painting. Distortion of the contours, which look like thin and wiry lines, betray overtones of fantasy, while at the same time, preserve their identity as natural objects.
As in any other rural culture, animals form an important part of people's lives, hence the frequent depiction of such animals. Fish is an emblem of fertility and is considered an auspicious symbol. To a Mithila artist, these objects are important enough to be a theme of their paintings.
